Two lotus flowers, painted with a dry, chalky hand, lean out of a dark band across the centre of the canvas. To either side, rows of seed-pods are picked out in burnt ochre and gold, like specimens pinned to a weathered wall.
The palette is deliberately held back, bone, smoke, charcoal, so the gilding and the warm pods carry the colour. It is a calm, contemplative work that sits easily in a quiet room.
